Frequently Asked Questions
Want to brighten up your corner of Chorlton? Here are a few things you might like to know.
What's in it for me?
We’ve found that having art on your shutters deters graffiti, so having yours decorated may mean that you no longer have to pay for repeatedly getting them cleaned. When your shutters are vandalised, tagged and dirty, that’s all people see when you’re not there. Make your business memorable for the right reasons!
You’ll also be helping to make Chorlton a brighter place, contributing to pride in the area and helping to make Chorlton a place people want to visit.
Where do I start?
Easy. Have a look through our directory of artists and see if you like the look of the kind of work they do. You can use the link on each artist’s page to see more of their work, learn more about them and make contact. If you have any difficulties, contact us.
What's it likely to cost?
This all depends on how much preparation is needed and how complicated your required design will be. It could cost as little as £200 or as much as £1,000.
We don’t have grant funding available for projects, but if this changes, we will post information here.
What happens when I've chosen an artist and a design?
We strongly recommend you draw up an agreement with the artist so everyone is clear what has been agreed. Click here for a model contract ,which you’re free to use. Simply amend it to suit your needs to come to an agreement that all parties are happy with.
Who decides what the art looks like?
You do!
You will negotiate a design with an artist. This could be something as simple as painting the shutter over in a dark-ish colour, something abstract or a picture of your favourite flowers. Really, anything is possible. Choose a style you love and discuss with the artist from there.
Do I need to provide any equipment?
The artists will probably provide their own equipment. If they need anything from you they will let you know at contract stage.
How long will it take?
Most shutters are painted in just a day or two – again, it depends on the complexity and style of your design. A schedule should be clarified with the artist at contract stage, not only for length of time it will take, but also for the work to be done at a time that suits your business.
And what's in it for us?
A brighter Chorlton!
Chorlton Street Art is a long-term project – a partnership between Chorlton Civic Society and Chorlton Traders. We would love to see artwork on your shutters – it all helps to make Chorlton more vibrant and colourful, reflecting our creative community.
We take no commission, referral fees or any kind of payment from artists – and your business is with them, not with us. Likewise, we accept no liability for any issues arising from your private agreement with artists.
